WHAT CAN I DO?

In the past year, we have witnessed many sad events: wars, natural disasters, and people forced to leave their homes and homelands... All we can do is often just witness... We feel there is nothing we can do to improve the world and reduce suffering. This feeling makes us feel hopeless and we lose our last remaining courage to do something. Inside our heads or around us, we often hear the question: But this is a question that befits courage, not despair. “Why don't others do something?” is a question for those who stop looking for solutions in the outside world and focus on their responsibilities.

“What can I do?” It’s a question asked not when a person feels helpless, but when they genuinely start searching for a solution for the first time. It’s asked when one is ready to do whatever is necessary to change their current situation. No matter how hard it is, no matter the results, it is asked at the moment when one is determined to create the necessary cause.

We may not have great powers, we may not have great means. We may not be in a position to make big decisions. However, no matter who we are, no matter how limited our power or means may be, we must remember that there is always something we can do.

-Valuing Simplicity: Our position in life brings us many responsibilities. Father must take care of his children. A student must focus on their studies. A shopkeeper must look after their store and customers. No matter how unrelated our responsibilities may seem to our problem, fulfilling them in the best way possible is the first step toward a solution. If a person wants to offer more benefits, they must first fulfill their current responsibilities well. At the beginning of primary school, students are made to draw straight lines for pages. When the teacher sees that the students can do this easily and properly, they move on to letters. Our responsibilities in life are like the straight line exercise. We are given more authority and responsibility not when we want it, but when we are ready for more. That is why, if the goal is to take greater responsibility in different scenes, one must first do justice to the scene one is in.

-Remembering that we are responsible for the causes, not the results: People rush for results. They give up when they don't get immediate rewards for their actions. Those who achieve success in life are those who, despite all the defeats, remain patient and keep focusing on the causes. For example, a buffet owner opens his shop every morning at the same time, even though he has no customers. Years later, major companies opened offices in the neighborhood. His is the only shop known to be open early in the morning. It becomes a place where all employees come to have breakfast. He earns most of his income at this time of the morning. The owner of the buffet has achieved this result after years of reasons he has put forward without thinking about the result.

We, too, should not give up on doing good just because we don’t see immediate results. We can’t know how today’s small good deed will affect tomorrow.

-Strength in Unity: We often think we must face life’s challenges alone. However, everyone who stands with us in the process has a share in the result. Our friends, our family, our spouse, our children… Everyone contributes to the outcome in areas where they offer us their awareness.

For instance, the success of a student who achieves high scores on university entrance exams is also the success of their family and those around them because they had a shared consciousness throughout the process. The student's mother might have allowed them to take fewer household responsibilities so they could focus on studying. Siblings took care to play quietly while the students studied. His friends tolerated not seeing him for a long time. Even the grandmother, who hadn't seen the student in a year contributed to the successful outcome.

No matter how impossible the goal may seem, those who come together for that goal become stronger.

- Increasing Sincerity: Sincerity is consistency of thought and behavior. It is our sincerity that will move us toward our goals. If we don’t act according to our desires, they remain just desires. Everyone wants a good job, a good family, and a good community. However, if what they do is not in this direction, if they are not sincere in these desires, they cannot achieve their desires. We may be sad about the state of the world. We may hope to change things. But if we can't demonstrate our sincerity through our behavior, it will remain just a wish. It is important to want to stand against injustice, but what is more important is what we do to stand up to those who commit injustices.

-Raising Awareness: To be able to stand with those who are wronged is only possible through a fair perception. Every event has both a visible and an invisible side. The important thing is to see the truth. When people can critically analyze events, they reach the truth. For this, we must be able to ask the right questions and test the consistency of what is conveyed to us. We also must perceive the truth and raise awareness about it in our environment.

-Not Falling into Despair: A person loses not when they are defeated, but when they give up. In any aspect of life, the greatest strategy of our competitors or enemies is to make us withdraw from the struggle by our own will. The easiest way to do this is to lose confidence in ourselves and our efforts. In this way, our competitors win against us without much difficulty. Therefore, falling into despair is like losing the fight without even trying.

People make choices at every moment. With each choice we make, we shape our future. What do we continue to do today, even if we don't get anything in return? What reaction do we show by saying, “This is the best I can do,” without saying little or much, big or small? All these are more valuable than the results. We should focus on “What are we doing?” when there is someone who is being wronged every day in the world we live in.

Now is the time to answer this question: "Will we, like the ant, carry a drop of water to the fire, no matter how small?" Or will we stand by and watch the fire, saying, "What can I do?"
