"Mom, it got stuck again! I'm so tired of this. When will I be able to pass through doors with ease? When will I be able to move without anyone's help.”
She continued complaining while trying to free herself from where she was stuck.
"Did they not think about this when building these doors? If I had the strength, I'd want to tear down all the walls. I just can't fit through the door in this wheelchair."
Emma had been trapped under the rubble of their house after the February 6th earthquake. As a result, she sustained injuries to many parts of her body, and due to the walls falling on her legs, they had to amputate them. She had also lost one of her siblings in the earthquake.
At twenty-two years old, though she was in her final year of university, she had frozen her enrollment because she didn’t want to attend school in a wheelchair. She had asked for her registration to be completely canceled, but her family hadn’t done so, thinking she might change her mind in the future.
“Mom, where have you been? How long have I been yelling at you, you're making everything so difficult!”
Since childhood, she had been someone who got caught up in the smallest details and found fault with many things. She was known for getting into arguments in the neighborhood. No matter what her mother did, she couldn’t change this trait of hers.
She continued displaying the same behaviors at school. She wasn’t exactly an angry person, but she had an impulsive demeanor. This trait of hers worked to her advantage as well; with her quickness, Emma had won every competition that required speed at school. Her reputation had started to spread across the district where her school was located. This situation also made her ambitious. After each success, she made every effort to achieve the next one.
Just as the inter-district races were about to start, they had to go out of the city due to his father's work. She was going to win many more beautiful races, but now it was time to leave Istanbul and the transition to a new process had begun. Life was giving signs for her, little by little. But her active desires prevented her from seeing them. This situation brought along ambition and anger and made her behavior rebellious. She started clashing with everyone who stood in her way, especially her family, opposing anyone who hindered her from achieving what she wanted.
Ah, if only she knew that events beyond our control come to strengthen us...
When her high school years ended and the university semester came, she chose a marginal department just to spite her parents. Almost as if she wanted to punish them. The prejudices she had formed in her mind and her belief that life was trying to hinder her success had led her to this decision. Just one semester before graduation, she experienced the second major shock of her life with an unexpected earthquake. It was, of course, unrealistic to expect a young woman whose every wish had been granted as a child to be easily satisfied now.
Life, which had taken her feet, had offered her many advantages. She received an office job offer at a remarkably young age. Her neighbors had changed, and she was now surrounded by warm and friendly people. But Emma, focused on the disadvantages of her life, struggled to see these positives. When life takes something away, it also gives us many things. It was a problem when the comparison was with someone else, when you wanted their life.
Life presents advantages and disadvantages as a package. Did the person who aspired to those advantages want those disadvantages along with them?
Are our shortcomings flaws? Don’t we have strengths alongside our weaknesses? Why do we focus only on what’s missing? Isn’t it what we already have that truly makes us who we are?

YanıtlaSilLife offers us both advantages and disadvantages, but we often miss our own advantages by focusing on the ones others have
