"I don't need to think about how someone is a fraud," she said; everything was clear.
Alice had been working at a charity organization for a long time. She loved helping people, and it made her feel good. In a previous seminar she attended, she was told that “As you meet others' needs, your own needs will also be met”, and this deeply influenced her. She had planned her life purpose accordingly. Helping others without expecting anything in return had become her way of life.
One morning, as she was driving back home after dropping her daughter off at school, an elderly woman stopped her car. "Can you drop me off at the bus stop ahead?" the woman asked. Alice thought, "Thank goodness, today I have another opportunity to help someone." They started a deep conversation on the way. The elderly woman shared that her husband had passed away fifteen years ago, and five years ago, she had lost her son to a heart attack. She mentioned that she was raising two young orphan granddaughters and was struggling financially because of this. Her daughter-in-law had just started a new job. As Alice listened to the woman's story, she felt very sorry for her. She wanted to do something for her immediately, without hearing more.
Alice gave a large amount of money from her pocket. After all, her only concern was to receive the woman's prayers. After dropping the woman off at the bus stop, Alice wondered on her way home, "Was that woman really in need?" She quickly dismissed the thought, telling herself, "Don't be ridiculous, of course, she was in need. No one could make up such a story."
As she got out of the car, she had asked for the woman’s phone number. The elderly woman said she didn't have a phone and asked for Alice's number to reach her through her granddaughters’ phone. Alice had said, "Please call me as soon as possible; I'd love to visit you." The woman had replied, "Of course, of course."
Throughout the day, Alice couldn't stop thinking about it. It was eating her up inside. Could she have been defrauded? She hoped the granddaughters would call her so she could understand the situation. A few days passed, and then one morning, she saw the same elderly woman again trying to stop passing cars at the same spot. When Alice saw this, a light bulb went off in her mind. She jumped out of the car and ran toward the woman in a hurry.
Before she could say, "What are you doing here again?" the woman started running away. Alice was both upset and very angry. She wondered if she should call the police. But then she started to think, "Why did this happen to me? Why did I come across this woman when I just wanted to help someone with such good intentions?"
As soon as she thought about it, the answer came to her mind.
People, even with good intentions, cannot control their desires, their consciousness inevitably shuts down and they cannot see the truth.
This was exactly what happened to Alice. She couldn’t understand the woman’s situation because she wanted to help so much.
When she recalled the conversation, she realized that the woman was such a professional impostor that she didn't even ask for money. She had only said, "I have two orphans, and I need money for books this week. I came to my niece's to get it."
This sentence told a lot. Even though there was no direct request for money, Alice had still chosen to help.
The problem was the desire to help "too much." Even people with good intentions make mistakes when they want to help too much. Because excessive desire makes a person emotional. When they become emotional, they can't see the truth and fail to make logical decisions.
She remembered the news reports about how people were defrauded. Sometimes the victims were doctors, professors, or even lawyers. She realized that this situation had nothing to do with one's level of education. How could someone get people to withdraw all their money from their bank accounts and leave it in the middle of a park with just one phone call?
The whole point was to make people not think by causing fear, and anxiety and emotionalizing them. When he succeeded in this, the defraud had achieved his goal.
Wanting something too much, even with good intentions, or wanting too much of something, or wanting too far away from something, makes people make mistakes.
"Could decisions made with emotions always end in disappointment?" she kept thinking about all this.
In the end, she had learned a lot without even realizing it. From now on, she would continue helping others, but without getting too emotionally involved. Maybe she should have researched and found out who to help, without taking what was coming her way as an opportunity. She was not going to stop helping, but she was going to gather good intelligence on 'who to help and how to help’.
As the old saying goes, "A misfortune is better than a thousand pieces of advice."
That was exactly what she had experienced.
