LEAVE IT FOR TOMORROW

Jacklyn opened her eyes and looked at the clock next to her; it was almost 11 o'clock. What a beautiful Saturday morning, she thought. She was very hungry. She thought about making herself a nice breakfast and watching the series she missed the night before. Then she remembered the dishes from the night before and the mess in the kitchen. "Ugh, I need to do the dishes but I'm very hungry, let me eat breakfast first, and then I'll do them all together," she said. She got out of bed and was going to change but couldn't find her clothes. It occurred to her that they were in the laundry basket, waiting to be washed for a week. "Oh whatever," she said, "I'll take care of it sometime today." She went to the kitchen, found a corner in all that mess, and started preparing her breakfast.

There were a lot of thoughts in her mind. She was going to send a report to Mr. Adams at work, but that had also been postponed until Monday. Her mailbox was full of files to be done. Her aunt had surgery and she had to visit her, but she just couldn’t go. It would have been nice if she could go today, but she had lots to do. “Anyway,” she said, “I’ll go next week.” At that moment, she chopped some tomatoes and toasted some bread. Suddenly, she remembered the watch she had given to be repaired. Months had passed, and they had called her many times, but she hadn’t been able to go and get her watch. She kept saying “I’ll go tomorrow or I’ll go the next day”. The days must have gotten too short, she thought. She just couldn’t catch up on things.

She remembered her mother. How she managed the needs of her husband and five children. The ironing and responsibility of each of their laundry… And she would not sleep without finishing her daily chores and preparation for the next day. Moreover, she always had something to knit in her hand. How did she manage it? She suddenly started frowning. Jacklyn was not happy with her life. She made chaos in the house where she lived alone.

She was startled by a voice; her phone was ringing. It was her best friend Jenny. She told her about her situation on the phone. 'Everything in my life has piled on top of each other and turned into something I can't handle. I have so many unfinished and postponed tasks that I don't know where or how to start,' she said.

Experimental Design Teaching says, “Whatever is postponed will grow.”

In Jacklyn’s story, her procrastination has grown and become a big burden. But she got some advice from her friend Jenny. She had recently attended a seminar. She told Jacklyn about it. She needed to find out why she was procrastinating. Moreover, the solution was simple but a little difficult to implement. Start little by little. “You should have an intention about something every day,” she said. “For example, today, tidy up the kitchen nicely. Then, clean up your dishes immediately after every meal.”

This method seemed very doable to Jacklyn. Without forcing herself too much and not delaying any work, and to do only one thing at a time... She could do this. She thanked Jenny, hung up the phone and with that motivation she started to tidy up the kitchen.

It had taken her hours to completely clean up the kitchen. Everything had piled up so much! But when she cleaned it all up, she felt relieved. That day, she had managed to clean the kitchen after every meal, without piling it up for the end of the day. In fact, she was in the beginning of something new; not postponing little things.

People sometimes postpone the things they have to do at that moment. And the longer they postpone, the bigger it gets. Jacklyn had so many things piled up. But now she realized how she could solve this problem and took a step towards the solution.

There is a solution to the problems encountered in life. Every problem comes to us with its solution. The issue is to focus on the reasons behind the problems and develop our problem-solving skills.

Of course, if we still have a problem that we want to solve...
